Go on, choose Estepona

Summertime in Estepona

Are you planning a holiday soon? Wondering where to go? Fancy somewhere close but culturally different, or somewhere you can find something familiar close by?  Well, let me state the case for my favourite place in the world, the perfect destination of Estepona

The first thing to point out are the incredible beaches, Estepona has 21kms of coastline and has two blue flag beaches, and uniquely you are able to sit on the beach and look back to beautiful mountains.  The mountain range of Sierra Bermeja is popular for cyclists and hikers, and during the summer, families head up there for picnics, or in the cooler months barbecues are allowed on installed barbecues.

Secondly, the climate, Due to the range of sea and mountains, Estepona has a micro-climate with over 325 days of sunshine every year.  This micro climate makes it a 365 day a year resort, and Estepona is certainly quieter in the winter but never shut. The popular bars and restaurants are always busy, which is lovely for those lucky enough to live here.

Thirdly, Estepona has amazing history, the area has been occupied since prehistoric times and numerous artifacts have been recovered.  The name Estepona comes from the Moorish Astabbuna or Al-extebunna, and Estepona and it´s neighboring area has been the scene for many land and sea battles.  Points of interest are an old clock tower,  which are the only remains of a church which was built over a mosque when the town was captured from the moors in 1457 and a castle in nearby San Luis which was built as coastal defence.  Whilst you are here, do not miss a walk around the old town of Estepona, newly refurbished with its brightly painted flower pots, you cannot fail to love it.

Forthly, something very important to bear in mind, transport links, Estepona is very well served.  It is situated 40 minutes away from Gibraltar and about 50 minutes from Malaga.

Estepona is served by the A7 moterway, which runs along the Costa del Sol. There is also a toll road, referred to as the AP7 Autopista, which provides faster travel along the route between Málaga and Estepona by-passing many of the urban areas along the route, such as Marbella. There are two toll stations en route, toll charges do differ throughout the year, and will double in high season.

Fifth, there is so much to see locally, you can lord it up at Puerto Banus, or sample the brilliant Selwo Safari Park, play around at one of the brilliant inflatable water parks or sample the Butterfly Park or the slightly scary Crocodile Park.  That is just a sample, there is so much more to see, there really is something for everyone.

Sixth is shopping, Puerto Banus or Marbella for the designer gear, or one of the many local shopping centres sprinkled down the coast for more high street shopping.  Estepona has two markets, one on a Sunday in Estepona Port and one, the biggest one, on a Wednesday in the centre of town.

Seventh, the people, lovely, welcoming and always lively.  Most speak English but if you can practice a bit of your Spanish, the locals love it and have the patience of saints (I speak from experience).

Finally, the food.  Spanish food is so much more than Paella, although that is delicious by the way.  Estepona has Chiringuitos dotted down the beach, these are restaurants which serve fantastic food on the beach.  Most have the boat where fresh fish is barbecued and is amazing.  They are all brilliant but my personal favourite is Rossi, situated on the beach in the centre of Estepona town.  Apart from these Chiringuitos, there is a wealth of other cuisines and fabulous restaurants to choose from.

So have I convinced you? I hope so, Estepona is an absolutely amazing town, and I have not even mentioned all the local events that take place every weekend, from chess tournaments in the streets to flamenco exhibitions by the locals.  Loads to see and loads to do, it is a perfect destination any time of the year.   Come soon, if you want to see our properties or find out more information you can mail us anytime on info@dolphinestates.com.
