10 things to do in Estepona this summer
10 things to do in Estepona this summer
1. The Orchidarium
Relatively new to the town, the Orchidarium was opened in 2015 and is set slightly back from the centre in the newly developed area at the top of Calle Terraza. Full of stunning orchids, there are 5000 plants and 1.300 species and these have been carefully selected, so that visitors will be sure to see beautiful flowering displays no matter what the time of year.
One eye catching feature is the 17m high waterfall supplemented by an intermittent 30m waterfall. The path leads visitors behind this and then in front of the waterfall, where a small bridge goes over the pools of water at the bottom from where the path continues up through further displays of orchids.
2. Playa del Cristo
Although there is building work going on at the back of the beach, it is still well worth a visit.
Perfect for children as it is shallow, and the water is clear. You have the choice of two amazing chiringuitos for food, or if you just want a snack there are food vendors walking along the beach selling delicious cakes or ice creams.
In addition, the first stage of the building work has been completed and it has created a viewing gallery, mirador, with fantastic views of Africa and Gibraltar.
3. Esteponas old town
The old town of Estepona has undergone a bit of a transition of late. You can loose yourselves in the back streets, where the houses ooze charm. Littered with lovely restaurants and bars, each street has been transformed with hanging baskets each a different bright colour.´
It is a lovely place for a peaceful afternoon walk or dinner in the evening.
4. The Paseo
Personally my favourite place in Estepona, the Paseo Maritimo is the strip of walkway which runs along the Playa Rada, the main beach in Estepona. Winter or Summer it is a hive of activity, the young and old are out walking, skating, running, skateboarding or roller blading, all breathing in the amazing sea air and getting out and exercising in the most beautiful scenary. Recently, they have extended the paseo, so you can now extend your walk, and power up the slopes to get the blood pumping!
5. Playa de Rada
Playa de Rada is Estepona´s main and largest beach. Always buzzing but never packed (unless you are there for one of the many festivals it is home to). Here you can spot the locals playing volleyball or even doing some very impressive acrobatics.
6. Estepona Port
Apart from being very pretty, with lots of nice boats to admire. Estepona Port comes alive at night, two rows of bars and restaurants make it a great place to spend your evenings, people watch or dance the night away. A warning though, the bars do not really get going music wise until midnight, so don´t worry if you are there at 9 and it is looking a little dead the rest of your party goers are still getting ready.
Estepona Port is also the venue for the Sunday market, definitely worth a visit, it has grown in recent years and whether you need a new bag, dress or just a souvenir there is something for everyone.
7. Golf courses
I cannot name just one, Estepona and its surrounding areas are littered with high quality golf courses.
If you fancy a game, do some research, some of the courses are for the serious players amongst you, whereas many others welcome the novice or intermediate players. Find one which is right for you.
8. Ruta de Murales Artisticos or The route of the murals
Estepona´s murals have grown so much over the past few years, it is difficult to spend any length of time here and not see one. There is now over 50 dotted around the town, with more planned. They are all so different, and fascinating. My personal favorite is the dia de pesca, which is situated at the top of Calle Terraza, it is painted on the sides of three apartment blocks, making an absolutely stunning result.
9. Estepona´s gormet food market
Now called the St Louis Gourmet Market, it is housed on the site of the old municipal building. The new building will consist of 2 brewery areas, bartending, vinacoteca, cafeteria, terrace and a chill-out space.,
75 new jobs have been created, and products on offer include
oysters 'Amelie', Acorn-Fed Hams, seafood and fish. They will also have a space dedicated to rice dishes and another to Japanese cuisine, developed by David Juárez
The space is now looking modern and welcoming, and a great addition to our amazing town.
10. Just Estepona
I could list lots more activities, but rather than rush around, take time to just soak up the atmosphere of our beautiful town. Laid back, friendly and very beautiful, it is a truly amazing place to spend your holidays. Enjoy!
